projectWhiteCavas takes a leap to the other side of the river, not East Portland but over the Columbia River to Vancouver.  pWC is partnering with the Artist Collective and local artist to secure a vacant space to hold an “artist open call” event.  Based on reach in Portland with Eastside Industrial Council, No Vacancy Project and using the format of www.portlandcityart.org there just might be a great recipe for success.

Next steps

(1) please join in on the discussion/forum on http://guerrilla-media.com/  follow Olin’s forum

(2) meeting in the next few weeks with the http://novacancyproject.wordpress.com/ about best practices

(3) research commercial business owners with large space in the downtown core for the event.  Our first target is Koplan’s Furniture Store…amazing vacant space.

Extremely inspiring to spend the evening hanging out with individuals that all want to support the art community.  So refreshing!

Virginia Willard, BCA’s Executive Director and Board Chair for the Cultural Advocacy Coalition, is a featured as a guest columnist in The Oregonian. Her article, Valuing the Arts, reminds us as we celebrate Arts Advocacy Day to consider what the arts contribute to our individual and collective lives and to take action by letting our elected officials know how much Oregonians value the arts.

100th Monkey Art Studio

April 26, 2010

The 100th Monkey Studio is a socially conscious small business owned and operated by two women.

Misson:
The 100th Monkey Studio will provide anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation, a safe and affordable place to use art materials. They support each artist in their unique journey of using art as a means of individual self expression. The 100th Monkey Studio will provide the community with art resources while also being a creative place to visit and view art.

An open studio is a studio or work room that is open to all, where artistic or creative work can be viewed and created collaboratively. Artists and non-artists come together in the open studio to celebrate the social act of collaborating. An Open Studio is intended to foster creativity and encourage experimentation in a welcoming atmosphere of cultural exchange, conversation, encouragement, and freedom of expression.

Open studios can be traced back to 17th century Paris where artists and other creative intellectuals gathered.  Other art forms such as beat poetry can be traced back to originating in open studio settings. Post-WWII New York saw many open studios. One famous example, The Factory, was created by Andy Warhol.

A new vision, a new community

The Milepost 5 vision is that of a vital, empowering, supportive community of creatives. It is a vision of opportunity where creatives working in all disciplines, at all stages of their careers, can afford to buy or rent — to live, work, and create among peers.

Milepost 5 is committed to creatives who are committed to furthering themselves, their work, and the larger communities. While Milepost 5 is an intentional community, with residents sharing the common bond of lives devoted to creative pursuits and professions, it is not a prescribed community. An open-ended endeavor, Milepost 5 is a ‘blank canvas,’ that will be ‘painted’ by the artists who make up the community.

The projectWhiteCanvas (pWC) team is on the hunt for vacant commercial space  in Portland, Oregon to launch its first studio project in June 2010.

Ideal space would be around 2,000+ square feet
Features would include: non-carpet floor, water, power, lighting and access to toilets and the ability to secure the space.

How it would work…

pWC would offer a four month membership for 30+ people depending on the size of the space.  The membership money would go directly to leasing the building for four months.  The first three months the space would be used as an art studio and the last month the members’ exhibit and hold events in the space as the team prepares the next vacant space for a new round of members.

The objective of rotating space is to allow pWC to support the building by bring people into the space and promoting the space during the main stream and social media outreach.  Chemistry is important…we are looking for a building owner/leaser that believes in the value of supporting creativity in our community and understands the benefits of leveraging combined efforts to find a long term tenant for the vacant space.

We will also be reaching out to local business and corporate sponsors to help subsides the cost of the space.  Good news…Rodda recently donated paint to the project.

Join the projectWhiteCanvas team as we celebrate the launch of The Space Artist Collective downtown Vancouver, WA on Saturday, April 24 starting at 630 pm

The goal of The Space Artist’s Collective is to inspire creativity. Its style heeds to a natural way of things, where a community of people does their part to direct and it takes on a life of its own in the process. Hanging from the walls is a rotation selection of artwork created in house. On the floors is much of the same. And scattered throughout are art supplies and stations, a video production area, stenciled images of Bill Murray á la Stripes much more.  read article…
